"Meet Eleanor Roosevelt," a one-woman theatre piece performed by Elena Dodd, will be presented on Saturday, October 10, as a benefit for the Peninsula Peace & Justice Center in Palo Alto.
The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 1140 Cowper St., with a free reception and "birthday party" for Mrs. Roosevelt (her birthday is October 11) after the performance. Tickets are on a sliding scale from $6 to $12.
Ms. Dodd has performed for a standing-room crowd at the Beijing Women's Conference in 1995, for numerous universities and political organizations, and at the Roosevelt family home in Hyde Park, New York. Her local performance, "Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," conincides with a visit to Ms. Dodd's sister, Eileen Drath of Portola Valley, who is active in education and social causes.
A graduate of Wellesley College with a master's degree in American literature from Boston University, Ms. Dodd's special interest in American playwrights led to working with new scripts in experimental groups in Boston. She has co-authored the series of four programs featuring Mrs. Roosevelt's life from childhood and adolescence to private citizen and first lady of the world. A dialogue with the audience follows each performance.
Her performance Saturday is presented by the Peninsula Peace & Justice Center in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For more information, call the center at 326-8837.
