Quit-smoking meds: what's on the market Quit-smoking meds: what's on the market (January 13, 1999)

Each quit-smoking product on the market has its own benefits and side effects, according to Jeannette Fornataro, Pharmacy Manager at Longs Drug Store in Menlo Park.

Some drug manufacturers offer a variety of counseling programs, money-back offers, and support networks, she says.

Here are some nicotine medications now available, with feedback that Ms. Fornataro has received from customers who use them.

Over the counter

Gum. Nicorette: Irritation in the mouth and throat.

Patch. Nicoderm CQ and Nicotrol: Irritation at the application site; patches fall off because the adhesives don't stick.

Prescription drugs

Patch. Habitrol and Prostep: Same comments as for Nicoderm CQ and Nicotrol.

Nasal spray. Nicotrol NS: Local irritation in the nasal passages.

Inhaler. Nicotrol Inhaler: The newest nicotine product available; works best for those who need to mimic the act of smoking.

In addition, Zyban is the first non-nicotine quit-smoking product. Taken orally, Zyban has reported side effects including dry mouth and insomnia, according to Ms. Fornataro. It also might interact with other medications, she says.
