Alpine All-Stars win District 52 tournament
(July 04, 2001) The Alpine Little League All-Stars won the District 52 Super Bowl Tournament on June 26 with a 12-2 victory over Pacifica.
The championship game was tied 2-2 at the end of two innings with Alpine scoring on stellar base running by Chase Rapp and Troy McCabe. The tie was broken in the bottom of the third by a Cameron Susk home run.
Mark Sallabery shut down Pacifica in the fourth and fifth innings while Alpine broke the game open with big hits by Michael Couch and Simon Neely.
The road to the district title began on June 23 with a 4-0 victory over Palo Alto National. The victory was highlighted by a dramatic game-ending over the head catch by center fielder Wes Payne.
In the second tournament victory, Alpine beat the Highland All-Stars 6-2. Alpine got off to a quick start with a textbook bunt single by Danny Zuckerman, followed by a Jordan Carr home run.
The tournment semi-final was played in the rain on Monday night, June 25. Daniel Johnston pitched a 6-inning gem for Alpine in a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Redwood City. Alpine's hitting was led by 2-run RBI hits by Michael Masket, Dwight Hobbs and Jordan Carr.
Over the four-game tournament, Alpine's hitting attack was led by clean-up hitter Trevor Lothrop who was 9 for 12 in the tournament. The pitching rotation of Daniel Johnston, Michael Couch, Cameron Susk, and Mark Sallabery gave up just 8 runs over the four games.
