Help needed

Urban Ministry of Palo Alto is sponsoring a potluck "Holiday Community Dinner," and is still looking for food, as well as volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up on Christmas day.

The potluck is to serve homeless and low-income people, as well as anyone else who'd like to participate, said Program Director Don Jensen.

The meal will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 25, at First United Methodist Church in downtown Palo Alto.

The organization is asking for cooked turkeys and hams, as well as other dishes to feed 12 people, such as sweet potatoes, vegetables, salads and desserts.

Food and toy drive

The Young Latino Leaders organization of Redwood City is asking for donations of canned food, new toys, gift certificates, books and clothing for low-income families. The drive continues through Friday, December 21. For pickup, call director Paul Vega at 780-7522.
Free rides on New Year's

Revelers can ride Caltrain free after 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. The line will also run extra trains after midnight.

Passengers ride free beginning with trains leaving San Francisco and San Jose at 8 p.m. on December 31. Celebrants can catch a train departing San Francisco at 12:45 a.m. or 2:15 a.m.

A northbound train will leave San Jose Diridon Station at 12:30 p.m. All trains will make regular weekend stops.

On New Year's Day, Caltrain will run on a Sunday schedule, operating 20 trains between San Francisco and San Jose. Trains will not operate south of the Tamien station in San Jose. For more information call 1-800-660-4287.
