Graduation 2002: Woodside High School Graduation 2002: Woodside High School (June 12, 2002)

At 10 a.m. at Woodside High School on Friday, June 14, with the Woodside High School Band performing the traditional "Pomp and Circumstance" march, the seniors of the class of 2002 will begin the celebration of their last day as high school students with a processional onto the football field.

Katy Stoll, the 2002 senior class president, will welcome parents and guests to the ceremony, and then senior Lauren Gutierrez will present a gift to the school from the senior class.

Principal Linda Common will introduce the valedictorians for the class of 2002: Heather Ballantine, Ashley Becker, Melissa Brose, Rachael Buckley, Christopher Crump, Rachel Friebertshauser, Kristin Nelson, Leslie MacMillan, Yanika Schneider and Jill Schulte.

In their speech, titled "This is Why We're Here," the valedictorians will reflect on the four years spent by the class of 2002 at Woodside, and offer light-hearted advice for the future.

The two other student speakers will be student body president Krystal Haughton, whose speech is entitled "What Lies Ahead," and Caitlyn Mary Gilley, who will talk about her years at Woodside in a speech called "The Cross Roads."

Ms. Common will give the commencement address on the importance of staying focused and maintaining one's dreams despite the many challenges that come along after high school. Also, she will highlight the accomplishments of the class of 2002.

Ms. Common will then present diplomas to the graduating seniors in the company of Lorraine Rumley, president of the Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees, and Rosa Perez, president of Canada College in Woodside. Also attending will be Carl Thompson, assistant superintendent of the Sequoia district. Selected seniors will read out the names of the graduates.

Class president Katy Stoll will return to the podium at the end of the ceremony to lead the graduates in switching their tassels from the left to the right side of their mortarboards, signifying their graduation from high school.

Parents and guests can then join the graduates for refreshments, picture-taking and visiting.

The graduates will return to the school in the evening to travel by bus to the graduation party.
