Kelly Park

A revamped Kelly Park in Belle Haven is scheduled to open in mid-August, reported Curtis Brown, director of community services in Menlo Park. The park's baseball diamond, basketball court, roller hockey court, and multipurpose field may look finished, but the grass is still taking hold, he said.
Road racer

Kathryn Sullivan had been at the Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, for two years before an injury forced her to give up running track for racing bicycles. By the end of the most recent season, Ms. Sullivan had been named the team's MVP.

Sullivan raced road bikes for two seasons after shin splints ended her track career. Competitions consist of three kinds of races: time trials, track races of about 10 miles, and road races of about 20 miles.

One of five seniors on a 15-member team, Sullivan hopes to keep racing next year at Duke University in North Carolina.

"I don't actually know if they have a real team but I'd like to do some sort of club team," she said.
Badminton title

Seth Elliot, Menlo-Atherton High School class of 1998, recently helped the Stanford men's badminton team win the national collegiate badminton championship.

Elliot and his partner, Josh Wong, also from Menlo Park, won the national championship title in men's doubles, and Elliot came in second in men's singles.

Also playing in the nationals was Kathryn Hargis, M-A class of 2001, who took home a trophy in women's singles. She was representing Connecticut College.
Volleyball champs

The Kings Mountain Fog six-man volleyball team recently competed in the U.S. open volleyball national championships and won the gold medal in the men's masters age 45s division.

Coached by Greg Close, the team defeated Pro Sport One of Manhattan Beach, California, to win the title. Local teammates include Frank Fredericksen of Menlo Park. Michael Graham of Redwood City was named to the all-tournament team.

The Fog also played in the age 50s competition, and was narrowly defeated in the championship match by the X-Macs team from Portland.

The eight-day event was held at the Dallas Convention Center May 25 through June 1. The Fog trains weekly at the Burgess Volleyball Club, run by teammate Kirk Anderson.
Jason Armstrong

Sophomore shortstop Jason Armstrong, a graduate of Menlo School, was one of four members of the Trinity University (Texas) Tigers baseball team selected for the American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-West Region Team.

Mr. Armstrong hit .394, scored 47 runs, and swatted four home runs, 44 RBIs, 13 doubles and three triples. The 6-foot, 175-pound Armstrong stole 21 of 24 bases.
New Menlo coach

Menlo College has hired Garrett Campbell to serve as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, the school announced. Mr. Campbell takes over one of last year's top five passing offenses in NCAA Division III, and will be Menlo's third offensive coordinator in as many years.

Last season, Mr. Campbell was the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. He graduated from Cal State-Fullerton and in 2001 received a master's degree in physical education from Northern State University in South Dakota, where he was wide receivers coach. The 2002 season will be his sixth as a coach at the college level.
