Graduation 2003: Hillview Middle School Graduation 2003: Hillview Middle School (June 11, 2003)

Eighth-graders will graduate from Hillview Middle School and the Menlo Park City School District on Friday, June 13, during outdoor ceremonies that begin at 5 p.m. on the school's blacktop.

The Hillview Graduation Band and Orchestra will open the program, which begins at 5 p.m. Music specialist Richard Vaughan will direct the group, members of the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade band and strings program, in performing "Pomp and Circumstance," "Royal March" and the "Raider's March."

Students are being chosen this week as graduation speakers representing their Class of 2003. The Hillview tradition is for each eighth-grader to write, memorize and give a speech on the same theme. This year's theme is "Life's Lessons."

The eighth-graders also are inviting an adult -- traditionally a favorite teacher -- to speak at graduation.

This year, the winner of the Jeff Sorrells Memorial Award will receive the scholarship award from graduating Menlo-Atherton senior Jared Hess, who received the award four years ago when he graduated from Hillview. The award, now given for the 17th year, was established by the Morris Sorrells family in honor of their son, who was a student at Hillview. The $1,200 scholarship will be used when this year's recipient graduates from high school.

Principal Mike Moore will give a talk and present the graduates to their eighth-grade core teachers, who will present the diplomas. The core teachers are: Margaret Appenheimer, Megan Curtis, Daria Finstad, Nancy Haight, Michael Kaelin, Lexy Keller, Carolyn Malquist and Lesley Martin.

After the ceremony, the graduates will celebrate at a party, planned by their parents on a surprise theme, in the school's multi-use building.
