Menlo man deemed fit for trial Menlo man deemed fit for trial (December 17, 2003)

A Menlo Oaks man who reportedly hoarded mice, rats and other animals in squalid conditions is scheduled to stand trial after a doctor found him mentally competent.

Robert Hollywood, 46, was charged with felony animal cruelty in October after Peninsula Humane Society officers found the animals in his home in the 900 block of Colby Avenue. A humane society spokesman described the situation as a "horror show," with some animals caged, others roaming through the filthy house, and still others dead.

Last week, a doctor who had examined Mr. Hollywood reported to San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Craig Parsons that Mr. Hollywood was mentally fit to stand trial.

Mr. Hollywood pleaded innocent on November 7 and is being held on $50,000 bail in council jail. He is next set to appear in court on December 17 for a pre-trial hearing.
