Free compost workshop planned

Dying to know what to do with those old food scraps, other than buying a pet pig? One option is to turn scraps and other organic materials such as yard trimmings into the soil additive known as compost.

A free workshop on composting is planned for Saturday, March 13, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Menlo Park Library at 800 Alma St. Open to all San Mateo County residents, the event will include a demonstration of the use of a composting bin.

Reservations are encouraged; call 1-888-442-2666 or email info@recycleworks.org. For more information, go to www.recycleworks.org.

Vacancies on city commissions

Menlo Park city officials are seeking residents to fill openings for unexpired terms on two city commissions.

The vacancies are: one on the Parks and Recreation Commission, ending in September 2006; and one on the Bicycle Commission, ending April 2007.

Commissioners advise the City Council on their specific topics.

The application deadline is 5:30 p.m. on March 15 for the Parks and Recreation Commission and on March 22 for the Bicycle Commission. Call City Clerk Silvia Vonderlinden at 330-6620 for more information.
