Democracy in Iran is topic of talk
Iran at a crossroads: what are its prospects for democracy?
This question is the topic of a lecture planned for Wednesday, March 24, presented by the World Affairs Council at the Bechtel International Center at Stanford University. Abbas M. Milani, visiting professor of political science at Stanford and research fellow at the Hoover Institution, will speak.
A 7 p.m. reception will precede the 8 p.m. program. The fee is $5 for World Affairs Council members, $8 for non-members, and free for Stanford students and faculty. To make reservations, call (415) 293-4600.
Nominations open for grand jury
People interested in checking into the workings of local government can apply now for a seat on San Mateo County's 2004-2005 grand jury. Judge Norman J. Gatzert of the San Mateo County Superior Court will interview candidates and select 19 people who represent a cross section of the county's population.
To qualify, county residents must be U.S. citizens 18 or over, and have lived here more than a year. In addition, they must be "of ordinary intelligence, sound judgment and good character, with sufficient knowledge of the English language." Elected officials are not eligible.
