Project Read Menlo Park is seeking volunteers to sign up for its next series of tutor training classes. Training dates are Tuesday, May 4, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and follow-up training from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 21.

Volunteers must attend all three training dates. Classes will be held in the lower level of the Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St., Menlo Park.

Project Read is dedicated to helping adults learn to read and write. For more than 19 years it has been training volunteers to work with adults. The volunteers have worked with more than 2,000 adult learners, assisting them in working towards a job promotion, helping their children with homework, reading the newspapers, voting for the first time, writing letters, and going on to achieve a general equivalency degree (GED) or attend a community college.

Cinco de Mayo celebration

It may be two days late, but the festive spirit should be still be flying high.

A free Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is planned for Friday, May 7, at Belle Haven Elementary School, complete with folkloric dancers, music, prizes and food. Open to the public, the event is scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fiesta is also intended to be useful. Several health and social service agencies will have booths at the event, including the San Mateo County Health Services Agency; El Concilio of San Mateo County, a nonprofit group seeking to improve the quality of life for Latinos; OICW; and Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital, said Dirk Alvarado, recreation supervisor for the city of Menlo Park.
