"Exploring a Sense of Place," a course of weekend outdoor explorations and evening lectures designed to help people understand the environment, offers a free orientation on May 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Foundation for Global Community, 222 High St., in Palo Alto.

The program includes monthly field trips to places such as open space preserves and the Baylands. The first trip, set for May 22, will include a short walk or an optional longer hike, and will strive to teach participants about Bay Area weather patterns.

The evening sessions include photo-illustrated lectures given by naturalists.

Registration fee for an entire year is $360, and includes 12 Saturday explorations, 12 Monday "enrichment evenings," notebooks, maps, docents, special guides and entrance fees to field-trip locales. Registration fee for six months is $190. Couples sharing materials may arrange reduced fees.

For more information, including a full schedule of events, contact Valerie Fisher or Karen Harwell at 328-7756, or go to www.globalcommunity.org/sense.
