Preserving beauty is the theme of flower show opening May 6

By Jane Knoerle
Almanac Lifestyles Editor

National Preservation Week, May 3-8, inspired the Friends of Filoli to transform its flower show (Thursday through Sunday, May 6 to 9) into a tribute to masterpieces of the past. Along with spectacular floral arrangements, table settings, vignettes and music, the flower show will include historical exhibitions.

The San Mateo County Historical Museum and the Museum of American Heritage will display early 1900s artifacts throughout the house, including a carriage and horse in the ballroom and period clothing in several rooms.

Gleim Jewelers will display vintage jewelry, ranging from Victorian to Art Deco, and Lynne Krantz, author of "To Honolulu in Five Days," will create table settings with Matson memorabilia, including photographs of the cruise ship, Lurline. The ship was named for Lurline Matson Roth, who gave the Filoli estate to the National Trust for Historic preservation in 1975.

"Preserving Beauty" opens with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6. There will be music, hors d'oeuvres and wine, and guests will be able to get a close-up view of the flower arrangements before the crowds arrive the following day. Reserved tickets are $50, admission included.

Teas will be held at noon and 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8, in the Visitor and Education Center. Ticket price is $35 for adults, $21 for children.

A champagne buffet brunch will be served at 10:30 a.m., noon, and 1:30 p.m. on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9, in the Visitor and Education Center. Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children. Hurry to make reservations, as the brunch always sells out.

Admission to the flower show only -- from Friday, May 7, to Sunday, May 9 -- is $15 for adults; $1 for children ages 2 to 12; and free for children under 2. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you don't fancy brunch, box lunches may be pre-ordered for pick-up on Sunday only, May 9, in the Quail's Nest Cafe, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The box lunch is $18; the cost doesn't include admission.

For tickets and reservations, call 364-8300, ext. 508, or visit www.Filoli.org/calendar/registration.PDF.

Let's do lunch

Mr. Poizner's career began in Silicon Valley, where he started two technology companies. After 20 years, he sold his business and worked for a year in Washington as a member of the White House fellowship program. After returning from Washington, he worked as a teacher in East San Jose, where he was named "rookie teacher of the year."
