Ask the officer Ask the officer (June 09, 2004)

Menlo Park police officer Glenn J. Raggio answers questions about the police and law enforcement. Call 330-6396, or e-mail: asktheofficer@menlopark.org.

Q. What advice do you have for young people considering a career in law enforcement?

A. First, while it may seem a bit obvious, stay out of trouble. A criminal history can disqualify you. Also, becoming a cadet/explorer is an excellent way to explore the profession. Going on a ride-along is another way to see first-hand what is involved in being an officer. Administration of justice courses (offered in community colleges) can be a huge plus. College degrees can offer you more movement inside the department for specialties and promotion. Last but not least, grab an officer and ask him or her about the job -- if he or she enjoys the work, and what are some of the positives and negatives of the profession.
