Volunteers asked to adopt creek
Volunteers asked to adopt creek
(June 09, 2004) Nature-lovers who enjoy getting up close and personal with bugs and banks and weeds and water might think about adopting a stretch of San Francisquito Creek, or one of its tributaries, and becoming its streamkeeper.
The San Francisquito Creek Watershed Council is recruiting streamkeepers to monitor the conditions along their stretch of creek as a way of promoting the health of the entire creek system and its watershed. Volunteer streamkeepers will watch and report indicators of creek health. These include: plants, both native and non-native; bank erosion and logjams; trespass and vandalism; and spills and pollution.
There will be a training session for volunteer streamkeepers Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Woodside School, 3195 Woodside Road in Woodside.
The indoor morning session will focus on orientation to the "Streamkeeper Manual." In the afternoon, participants will go out into the stream to get hands-on practice in identifying the indicators of creek health.
Participants should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Drinks and snacks will be provided, but volunteers should bring their own lunch.
