Eighth-graders will graduate from Corte Madera School and the Portola Valley School District on Thursday, June 17, during the traditional promotional exercises that start at 5:30 p.m. in the school's multi-purpose room.

Four graduating students, chosen by a committee of eighth-grade teachers, will read their speeches written on the following themes: Kyle Jones, "Responsibility"; Molly Dickinson, "Friendship"; Hannah Henderson, "Dreams for the Future"; and Kate Taylor-Keeling , "Thanks and Friendship."

Students Noah Greenberg and Jon Harmon will perform an original song.

During the ceremony, Principal Ed Winchester and teachers will announce and present awards. They include the Outstanding Student Award; Principal's Award; the C.A.R.E award, which stands for character, attitude, respect/responsibility, and effort; athletic achievement award; and academic honors and recognition for school service.

Deborah Rappaport, president of the Portola Valley School District board, will talk and recognize parents whose youngest child is graduating with the Class of 2004. She and Principal Winchester will present the diplomas.

A reception for graduates, parents and friends, hosted by parents of seventh-graders, will be held immediately after the ceremony. Later, the graduates will move on to Portola Valley Town Center for the graditional grad party, planned by their parents on a surprise theme.
