La Entrada School leads the graduation procession
La Entrada School leads the graduation procession
(June 09, 2004) La Entrada School in Menlo Park leads the procession of area middle schools that will graduate their eighth-graders this week and next.
The traditional ceremony at La Entrada is on Wednesday, June 9, at 6 p.m. on the school's blacktop. It features student speakers, short recorded reflections by each of the 100 eighth-graders and award presentations. The students will walk to the blacktop to the music of "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain.
Nina Baron, president of the La Entrada Student Council, will open the program as the emcee. She will introduce Briana Neveras, vice-president, who will lead the flag salute, and then Superintendent Mary Ann Somerville of the Las Lomitas School District, who will welcome the students, their families and guests.
La Entrada Principal De Brummett will announce the student awards in a variety of categories. A representative of the Larry McCarty Foundation for Kids will present the Larry McCarty Inspirational Award, given to an eighth-grader nominated by a peer, with the final selection by a committee of foundation and school representatives.
Elise Delagnes, student body treasurer, will introduce the four student speakers: Coleman Bass, Kahri Griggs, Robert Olvera and Ashley Parish. All eighth-graders wrote an essay in their English classes about a person, place or event that inspired them.
Student Kim Blears, eighth-grade coordinator, will present the class gift to the school.
Principal Brummett will introduce Steve Sowiski, president of the Las Lomitas School District board, who will award the diplomas.
Closing the ceremony, Nina Baron will give the students' response before the recessional "Good Riddance," also known as "Time of Your Life" by Green Day.
A reception will be held immediately after the ceremony.
