Leaving a legacy
Leaving a legacy
(June 09, 2004) Captions with Carol Ivie photos in print edition:
When driving on Santa Cruz Avenue, look toward Hillview Middle School. You may see the face of someone you recognize smiling from the school's exterior walls. Thirty Hillview students of art specialist Terry McMahon drew poster-like portraits of themselves -- in an Andy Warhol style -- from photographs, then transferred the drawings to an exterior wall and painted them in vibrant colors. Ms. McMahon started the Hillview mural project 12 years ago to tap student creativity and beautify the school's then dinghy exterior walls. Working with her and the students over the years have been docents Sue Schied and Wendy Ellis. Last month, the mural project received recognition as a J. Russell Kent Exemplary Program from the San Mateo County School Boards Association.
Portrait of an artist
Taylor Burwell will graduate from Hillview Middle School this week, but his self-portrait and those of other mural students will be a lasting feature of Hillview School in Menlo Park. He's adding finishing touches to this detail from the mural, created by advanced art students of teacher Terry McMahon. For reports on Hillview and other school graduations, see the Almanac's special section that starts on Page 16.
