Menlo woman to be honored for pool rescue
(June 09, 2004) Honors are ahead for a Menlo Park woman who helped save the life of a motionless boy discovered at the bottom of an apartment complex swimming pool during an afternoon party on Memorial Day.
Ceremonies by the Menlo Park City Council and the Menlo Park Fire Protection District are planned for the Tuesday, June 15, council meeting to recognize resident Dana Kleinerman, said fire district Battalion Commander Jimmy Lichtenstein.
Ms. Kleinerman, 19, dove into the pool and rescued a 14-year-old boy after hearing screams for help as she was walking by the apartment at 1216 Mills St., she said in recalling the incident.
"I wasn't really thinking," Ms. Kleinerman said about her decision to dive in fully clothed in a T-shirt, pants and shoes. Adrenalin drove her, she said.
"We believe this young lady did save a life," Mr. Lichtenstein said.
Ms. Kleinerman is home from college for the summer. While she said she was an active swimmer in the Palo Alto Swim Club for some eight years, she said she'd had no formal lifeguard training.
After Ms. Kleinerman brought the unconscious boy to the edge of the pool, others assisted in pulling him out of the water. Firefighter paramedics revived the boy and took him to Stanford Hospital, where he was admitted, Mr. Lichtenstein said, adding that he had no further information on the boy's current condition.
