Ask the officer Ask the officer (June 30, 2004)

Menlo Park police officer Glenn J. Raggio answers questions about the police and law enforcement. Call 330-6396, or e-mail: asktheofficer@menlopark.org.

Q. Has Menlo Park ever lost an officer in the line of duty?

A. Officer John Lyle is the only Menlo Park police officer who has been lost in the line of duty. He was shot and killed on September 22, 1960. He had followed a person who was driving a stolen car into one of our downtown parking plazas. A gunfight erupted after Lyle confronted the suspect; Lyle fell in the exchange. The John Lyle Park, located on Middle at Fremont, commemorates his life.
