Menlo police officers grant scholarships Menlo police officers grant scholarships (June 30, 2004)

Seven students who just graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School are getting a little help with their college education. Thanks to the Menlo Park Police Officers Association, each recently received a $500 scholarship check.

The awards went to these students planning careers in public service: Destiny Ball, Cheryl Flaherty, Krystle Koleckar, Stephanie Paepcke, Shannon Prior, Julia Ramirez and Krystin Wright.

This year, the scholarships are given in memory of Joseph Ochoa, a retired Menlo Park police sergeant who died last November after an illness.

In addition, two graduating eighth-graders each received a computer and printer from the police officers association. David Carr of Hillview Middle School and Maria Castallanos of Belle Haven Elementary School were chosen by teachers at their schools.

The awards are funded by donations from association members, Officer Raggio said: "This is all just about cops who realize that if we can make a difference with these kids when they're this age, it might make our job a little easier later on."
