Record signup for Vikings football season Record signup for Vikings football season (July 14, 2004)

A record 116 players have signed up for the 2004 Pop Warner football season with the Pacific Northwest Regional champion Menlo-Atherton Vikings, said team president Bob Williams.

Additional signups for players ages 8 through 13 will be accepted through July 30, Williams said. Information is on Viking Web site, www.mapopwarner.com, or by calling 562-1950.

Competition will be held in the Mitey Mite Division for 8 and 9-year-olds, and older players will participate in Junior Pee Wee, Pee Wee, and Junior Midget categories.

Action starts August 29 with the annual Pop Warner Jamboree at Menlo-Atherton High School. Practice through the month of August will be conducted at M-A with an exceptional group of veteran coaches.

Former Stanford and Miami Dolphin tight end Greg Baty will coach Mitey Mites, together with Robert Guzman. John Paye Sr. and Jr., both ex-Stanford players, will coach in the Pee Wee division. Junior Midget coaches include three members of Stanford's 2000 Rose Bowl team, Chris Johnson, Eddie Patterson and Emory Brock.

The Stanford trio coached the Viking Pee Wee team to the Pacific Northwest title last November with a victory over Medford, Oregon. Many of those athletes will be moving up to the Junior Midget category this season.

Viking players represent South County communities from East Palo Alto through Portola Valley, including Menlo Park, Atherton and Woodside.
