A public forum on disaster preparedness and homeland security in San Mateo County is planned for Tuesday, July 27.

Held in the county Board of Supervisors' chambers at 400 County Center at the corner of Bradford and Hamilton streets in Redwood City, the forum will cover such topics as bioterrorism and public health, transportation security, and local improvements in disaster planning and coordination, according to a press release from Supervisor Mark Church's office.

The forum is scheduled to run from 3 to 5 p.m. Call 363-4571 for more information.

Library talk gives update on Medicare

The latest changes in Medicare and its prescription drug coverage will be the topic of a Saturday, August 7, talk at the Menlo Park Library.

Diana Gray of San Mateo County's health insurance counseling and advocacy program is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. on changes that take effect in 2006.

The event takes place in the downtown meeting room at the library, located at 800 Alma St. Free van service is available for Menlo Park residents who are seniors or disabled; call 330-2512 to schedule a pick-up.

Workshop on running for public office

Residents of San Mateo County interested in running for public office or participating in a campaign are invited to attend a workshop entitled "The Mechanics of Running for Public Office" on Thursday, July 29, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.

Volunteers sought

The San Mateo County Transportation Authority is seeking applicants to fill volunteer positions on its Citizens Advisory Committee. The authority oversees funding for transportation projects in the county. Applications are available at www.smcta.com; at the Transportation Authority office, 1250 San Carlos Ave., second floor, in San Carlos; or by calling 508-6447. Deadline for applications is Friday, July 30.

USGS lecture on rock clocks

"Secrets in Stone: the Role of Paleomagnetism in the Evolution of Plate Tectonic Theory" is the title of the next public lecture at the U.S. Geological Survey on Thursday, July 29, starting at 7 p.m. in the conference room of Building 3, at 345 Middlefield Road.

Research geologist Jack Hillhouse will introduce a USGS documentary describing work of USGS scientists in the famous tar paper shack, and lead a tour of the new Paleomagnetics Laboratory. For information call 329-5000.
