Menlo Park: Field to be named after Tom Harrison
(November 03, 2004)
Once renovations of the Little League field at Burgess Park in Menlo Park's Civic Center are complete, the field will also have a brand-new name: Tom Harrison Field.
Near the first-base line, a sign with a tree logo will honor Mr. Harrison, a former Parks and Recreation Commissioner who died in February after an illness.
At the urging of Mayor Lee Duboc, a former Parks and Recreation Commissioner who had worked with Mr. Harrison on many issues, the City Council voted October 26 to approve naming the field after him.
The vote was 3-2, with Paul Collacchi and Nicholas Jellins abstaining because the council typically does not name a city facility after someone until five years after his or her death. Mr. Collacchi has said he thinks it's best to wait and "keep grief from clouding the decision."
Mr. Harrison worked on the successful 2001 campaign to pass Measure T, a $38 million city bond measure fueling the Burgess work and other parks projects.
