Myth and nature are focus of photography exhibit
(November 03, 2004) An exhibit of painted photographs by Brigitte Carnochan of Portola Valley will open on Friday, November 5, at the Modernbook Gallery in Palo Alto. The show will feature about 25 hand-painted gelatin silver prints -- floral and fruit still life images and nude figure studies alluding to Greek myths. The photographs are from Ms. Carnochan's most recent body of work, titled "Myth and the Natural World."
Opening-night hours are 7 to 10 p.m., and the artist will be present. The show ends December 9. Ms. Carnochan taught English at Palo Alto High School, and later taught writing at Stanford before turning to photography as a full-time pursuit. She says her life-long interest in dance and gardens coalesced as her principal subject matter: the formal beauty of bodies and flowers. Named one of 12 international Hasselblad Master photographers for 2003, Ms. Carnochan uses black-and-white film and a medium-format camera. She processes her own film and makes her own prints before finishing the photographs with oil paints, making each image unique. Modernbook Gallery is at 494 University Ave., in Palo Alto.
