County kudos for green projects
(March 02, 2005) A project to restore San Francisco Bay salt ponds is one of the winners of this year's Sustainable San Mateo County Awards.
A public dinner to honor award winners was held Thursday, February 24, at the Best Western Grosvenor Hotel in South San Francisco.
Cargill Salt Inc.'s salt-pond restoration project was honored as a huge advance in the well-being of the entire area. It is one of the first projects in decades to reverse the practice of filling in the Bay, according to Ricki McGlashan, the Sustainable San Mateo County award chair.
Other honorees are the recycling program at Central Elementary School in Belmont; Jacob's Ranch/Del Cabo, Inc. in Pescadero, which has become one of the largest and most successful organic herb farms in the nation; Surfrider Foundation, San Mateo County chapter; and county Harbor Commissioner Pietro Parravano.
The 2005 Green Building Award was bestowed upon the D'Souza/de la Torre residence in Belmont.
Sustainable San Mateo aims to educate and demonstrate ways to improve life in the county. Information about its programs is available at www.sustainablesanmateo.org.
