Q. Are cats and dogs at risk for high blood pressure? A: Yes! However, unlike in people, who get primary hypertension, cats and dogs acquire high blood pressure through other diseases, such as: kidney failure, hyperactive adrenal glands, hyperactive thyroid glands, and cancer. High blood pressure can injure the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain. Early detection through blood work and blood pressure checks improves the prognosis for this treatable disease. Dr. Eric Griesshaber, a veterinarian and owner of Portola Valley Veterinary Clinic (portolavalleyvet.com), answers readers' questions. Submit questions to Eric@PortolaValleyVet.com, and say it's for his Vet Talk column in the Almanac. Or call him at 851-7578. |
