Troop 222: Three new Eagle Scouts Troop 222: Three new Eagle Scouts (March 23, 2005)

Three members of Boy Scout Troop 222 in Menlo Park -- Jeffrey Moore, Michael Merlone and Zane Brown -- recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Michael Merlone is a sophomore at Menlo School, where he is on the water polo and swim teams, and on the school's honor role. This year he was elected captain of the water polo team and named most valuable player.

His Eagle Scout service project was building a fence enclosing a garden area at Flood Park in Menlo Park. He and a group of scouts also refurbished the garden area. The project took 120 hours of work.

Zane Brown, who started scouting as a cub scout, has given many hours of service to St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Menlo Park, where he is an acolyte.

His scout service project involved planning and building a pathway into the grounds of the church. He directed and coordinated work by many young scouts, who put in 180 hours on the project.

Zane is a senior at Menlo-Atherton High School, where he was part of the freshman transition group, as well as Close Up, which took a trip to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration of George W. Bush.

Jeffrey Moore, who joined scouting in 1997, is a freshman at Chapman University in Orange, California, and is interested in a career in the film industry. At Serra High School he took part in the crew and swim teams, and founded the Serra mountain bike club.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he returned to his middle school, the Waldorf School, and took on the job of building two large sheds to store sports equipment. He designed the sheds, raised money for the materials, and then led a team of scouts in building them.

Troop 222 meets at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. For more information, call troop chairman, Marty Estkowski at 327-3518.
