Atherton calls special meeting to protest threatened end to train service
(April 06, 2005) By Andrea Gemmet
Almanac Staff Writer
A special meeting of the Atherton City Council has been called for 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5. On the agenda is a resolution protesting Caltrain's proposed elimination of service to the Atherton train station.
Caltrain officials, looking for ways to help slash a crippling projected deficit of $13.6 million, have proposed a complete revamping of the train schedule that includes the elimination of all service to four stations: Atherton, Broadway, College Park and Paul Avenue.
Atherton's Caltrain Corridor Subcommittee is also set to discuss the possible closure of the station later that same evening, at a meeting set to start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 5.
Both bodies meet in the Town Council Chambers, located at 94 Ashfield Road. For information call 752-0500.
The joint powers board that oversees Caltrain is holding a public hearing on the proposal at a meeting beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos.
Information on Caltrain's proposed train schedule and fare increases is available at Caltrain.org or by calling (800) 660-4287. Written comments can be sent via e-mail to changes@caltrain.com or to: Board Secretary, Caltrain, 1250 San Carlos Ave., San Carlos, CA 94070.
