Menlo Watch: Mayor gives county a nudge on Coleman Menlo Watch: Mayor gives county a nudge on Coleman (April 06, 2005)

Menlo Park Mayor Mickie Winkler has written to San Mateo County Supervisor Rich Gordon, urging him and the rest of his board to make upgrading Coleman Avenue the "highest priority."

"The current state of disrepair presents a significant traffic hazard, especially to the numerous pedestrians and bicyclists who routinely rely on this roadway," Ms. Winkler wrote March 30.

The unincorporated segment of Coleman is rougher and more narrow than the neighboring stretch in Menlo Park proper, and some residents have called for upgrades such as a separate path for bikes and pedestrians. Coleman is a common commute route to Laurel elementary and Menlo-Atherton high schools.

Mr. Gordon has said he's met with concerned residents and is waiting to hear more about what the neighbors in the area want. Some have said they like the road's rural feel and don't want to change it.
Council mulls traffic-impact fee

The fees charged to new Menlo Park development projects that could have major traffic impacts are getting another look.

On Tuesday, April 5, the City Council will discuss creating a study to update the fees, which have applied to new projects since 1995. Set at $1.60 per square foot of commercial development and $708 per residential dwelling unit, the fees have supported projects such as traffic calming and synchronizing stoplights on El Camino Real.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at 701 Laurel St.

Since the meeting is a study session, no formal action can be taken. The council typically ends study sessions with some direction to staff on how the next step on an issue will be taken.
