Fallen tree unleashes bees, power outage Fallen tree unleashes bees, power outage (April 06, 2005)

An oak tree that toppled over at the intersection of Kings Mountain and Woodside roads last week caused an 11-hour power outage that affected 219 Woodside customers, said a PG&E spokesman.

No one was injured when the tree fell at about 11 a.m. on March 31, but power poles and lines were significantly damaged, said Lt. Lisa Williams of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Efforts to move the tree, estimated to be more than 50 years old, were hampered by swarming bees dislodged from their hive in the tree.

Beekeepers had to be summoned to deal with the hive before crews could start work to remove the tree.

Kings Mountain Road was closed at Woodside Road while repair work went on, and Woodside Road was limited to one-way controlled traffic, Lt. Williams said. Bay City News Service contributed to this report.
