Philip E. Gannon

Engineering executive

Philip E. Gannon Sr., who co-founded the architectural and engineering firm of Keller & Gannon in San Francisco in 1941, died April 17 at his Atherton home where he had lived for 52 years. He was 89.

Keller & Gannon, which he founded with longtime business partner George Keller, had projects throughout the United States and in numerous foreign countries. Mr. Gannon worked at the company until he retired in 1996 at the age of 80.

A native of Faribault, Minnesota, Mr. Gannon graduated from the University of Washington in 1938 with a degree in electrical engineering. He spent several years working for the U.S. Civil Engineers in the Pacific Northwest.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gannon remained active with the engineering community, authoring numerous technical articles, holding membership and serving in numerous capacities in engineering associations. He was past president of the San Francisco Bay Area Engineering Council and was featured in the 1978-79 edition of "Who's Who in the West."

In 1993 he started a foundation that provides scholarships to Bay Area college-bound students pursuing an engineering major.

Mr. Gannon had an avid interest in Porsches, which he drove since 1955. He was a devoted golfer and member of Sharon Heights Golf and County Club for 40 years, and he enjoyed gardening, swimming and traveling, say family members. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church for 42 years.

Mr. Gannon was the husband of the late Eloise Thomas Gannon. He is survived by his five children, Ann Arsenault Minnich of Penn Valley, Teresa Wright of Lodi, Maureen Riedy of San Anselmo, Tom Gannon of Novato and Philip Jr. of Atherton; 11 grandchildren; and members of the extended Thomas family in Ukiah.

A funeral Mass was held April 22 at St. Denis Catholic Church with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park. Memorials in his name may be made to the Philip E. Gannon Sr. Scholarship Trust, c/o the San Francisco Foundation, Attn: Brent, 225 Bush St., San Francisco, CA 94104.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Redwood Chapel, Redwood City.

Clay S. Andrews

Teacher and administrator

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at St. Denis Church in Menlo Park for Clay S. Andrews of Menlo Park. Mr. Andrews died April 23 after a long illness. He was 83.

Friends may call at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City, between 5 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Mr. Andrews was born and raised in San Francisco. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco, a master's degree from San Francisco State University, and a doctorate from Stanford University.

During World War II, he served as a U.S. Army medic in North Africa and Italy. He was a teacher and administrator at San Jose State University for nearly 40 years. In retirement, he was a volunteer at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Mr. Andrews is survived by his wife, Jane, and several nieces and nephews. The family prefers contributions be made to the Salvation Army.

Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.
