Vet talk
Q. Do I need to brush my dog's teeth? A.: Yes! The American Veterinary Dental Society recommends daily teeth brushing for dogs and cats. Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by plaque and bacteria in the mouth resulting in red gums (gingivitis) and bad breath. In severe cases, teeth loosen and bacteria may spread into the blood stream, causing damage to the heart, kidneys and liver. Regular teeth brushing and dental cleanings are the best defense. Dental diets, chews, rinses and gels also help. For more information, go to www.vohc.org. Dr. Eric Griesshaber, a veterinarian and owner of Portola Valley Veterinary Clinic (portolavalleyvet.com), answers readers' questions. Submit questions to Eric@PortolaValleyVet.com, and say it's for his Vet Talk column in the Almanac. Or call him at 851-7578. |
