Stanford panel on stressed-out students
(May 11, 2005) Chasing after the perfect college for your teenager can be an ordeal, but it shouldn't be that way and doesn't have to be, according to two scholars coming to Stanford University this month for a two-day conference May 13 and 14 that will include a panel discussion open to the public.
The conference is titled "Stressed Out Students: Helping to Improve Health, Social Engagement and Academic Integrity."
On the panel will be Lloyd Thacker, executive director of the Education Conservancy and a critic of college ranking practices; Dr. Denise Clark Pope, a Stanford education professor who studies students' achievement-oriented stresses; and students from middle school, high school and college.
The two-hour panel discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Cubberley Auditorium in the School of Education building at 485 Lasuen Mall, near Hoover Tower.
The conference sponsors are Stanford's School of Education, the California Endowment, and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health.
For more information, call Ms. Pope at 736-1779 or send an e-mail message to dclark@stanford.edu.
