Cops, CHP focus on seatbelt violators Cops, CHP focus on seatbelt violators (May 18, 2005)

A county-wide, three-week effort by law enforcement agencies to crack down on drivers and passengers who don't buckle up is under way.

The "Click it or Ticket" campaign is part of a statewide and nationwide effort to enforce seatbelt laws. In the Bay Area, ticket fines are at least $89, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan O'Day.

Officers from the Menlo Park and Atherton police departments will be participating, as will deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

"We will be showing zero tolerance for anyone not buckled up," said CHP Chief Jim Inness in a statement.
