Housing the Portola Valley Library at Corte Madera School as an interim measure is a step closer.
Portola Valley School District trustees approved a proposed joint use agreement with the town at a special meeting on May 20.
The proposed pact will be on the Town Council's agenda for review and possible action Wednesday, May 25. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. in the Historic Schoolhouse at Town Center.
If approved, the library could reopen at Corte Madera in early August.
The five-page agreement spells out how the library -- scheduled to close June 1 at Town Center -- will move temporarily to two classrooms on the Corte Madera campus until a new library is built at Town Center.
The agreement would begin June 1 and terminate May 31, 2007, with a provision to extend the lease one year.
The decision to close the library was made by the San Mateo County Library Joint Powers Authority, based on a new engineering report that found the old building at Town Center is at risk of collapse in an earthquake.
Under the proposed agreement, the school district would not charge rent for the space, but all costs associated with the improvement, operation and maintenance of the space will be paid by the town.
