Avenidas is expanding its senior home repair program to include Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside and Los Altos Hills.

In addition, renters, 50 years and older, who live in cities served by the home repair program will also be eligible to use the services.

The Avenidas home repair program is available to anyone 50 years or older, at any income level, in the areas served.

Workers will do minor plumbing, painting and carpentry, replace light bulbs and broken switches, clean gutters and furnaces, and install deadbolt locks, as well as special aids for access, such as grab bars, handrails and wheelchair ramps.

The rate is $35 a hour; $30 an hour for large paint jobs.

Menlo Park man shot in East Palo Alto

A shooting incident during a Saturday evening rugby game in East Palo Alto on Saturday sent a 19-year-old Menlo Park man to the hospital.

Rugby fans and an East Palo Alto police officer heard gunfire at about 8:40 p.m. near Edison McNair Academy on Pulgas Avenue.

Officers administered emergency first aid to the shooting victim, who was found lying on the ground near a set of bleachers. Firefighters from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District took the man to a local hospital, where he is said to be in serious condition.

Sen. Speier talks about education

State Sen. Jackie Speier, whose district includes Portola Valley and Woodside, will talk about the state's education budget and other matters during a 90-minute meeting with the public in San Mateo on Thursday, May 26. The meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Aragon High School at 900 Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo. For more information, call 340-8840.

New law proposed for jurors' pay

Jurors employed by certain contractors doing business in San Mateo County would receive full pay for at least five days of jury duty under an ordinance proposed by San Mateo County supervisors Rich Gordon and March Church.

The ordinance would apply only to companies with county contracts of at least $100,000.

The Board of Supervisors will consider the proposal at its meeting on Tuesday, May 24, starting at 9 a.m. in the board chambers in the Hall of Justice, 400 County Center in Redwood City.
Redistricting focus of league's meeting

The governor's plan for redrawing California's legislative boundaries will be the subject of the keynote address at the 51st annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County on Thursday, June 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Tenfu Restaurant, 1352 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

Guest speaker John Willdermuth, political writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, will speak at 7 p.m. on "Redistricting: The Governor's Plan."
