State Controller Steve Westly, a resident of Atherton, will formally announce his candidacy for governor on June 18, his campaign office reported in a May 26 e-mail.

Mr. Westly, who was elected controller in 2002, formed an exploratory committee in April to look into running for governor in the 2006 election.

The official announcement will be made at simultaneous house parties all over the state, rather than at a typical political rally, said Steven Aronowitz, the political director for Westly for Governor.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not announced whether he'll run again. Mr. Westly will be the second Democrat to announce his gubernatorial candidacy, after state Treasurer Phil Angelides.
