Graduation 2005: Hillview graduates its largest eighth-grade class Graduation 2005: Hillview graduates its largest eighth-grade class (June 15, 2005)

Hillview Middle School will graduate 231 eighth-graders -- its largest class in the recent history of the Menlo Park City School District -- on Friday, June 17, during outdoor ceremonies that start at 5 p.m. on the school's blacktop.

The Hillview Concert Band will perform a pre-ceremony concert as well as the traditional processional "Pomp and Circumstance" by Edward Elgar, and "Legacy March" by Steve Hodges as the recessional.

Richard Vaughan, music specialist, will direct the band of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, as they also play "Peter Gunn," "Evil Ways," "Secret Agent Man" and "Louie Louie" as a prelude to the ceremony.

Students are being chosen this week as graduation speakers to represent the Class of 2005. The Hillview tradition is for each eighth-grader to reflect on life-shaping experiences, and then write, memorize and give a speech to classmates on lessons learned and universal truths.

The eighth-graders have invited Hillview teacher Phil Eaton, who directs special studies for sixth- through eighth-graders, to be the adult speaker at graduation.

Again this year, a member of the Morris Sorrells family will present the Jeff Sorrells Memorial Award, a $2,000 college scholarship, to an eighth-grader, who will use the college scholarship in four years upon graduation from high school. The award, now in its 19th year, was established by the Sorrells family in honor of their son, who was a student at Hillview.

Principal Mike Moore will give a short talk and present the eighth-grade class members to their core teachers, who will present the diplomas. The teachers are Barbara Berkowitz, Megan Curtis, Daria Finstad, Willy Haug, Jennifer Hutsell, Michael Kaelin, Lexy Keller, Carolyn Malquist and Shirley Reed.

Paula Chidichimo, , who is retiring after 38 years in the Menlo Park district as a teacher of Spanish language and culture, will assist the teachers in presenting the diplomas. She is recognized for her devotion to the students, leadership in the school community, and support of the Hillview Site Council, cooking club, talent show, student trips and district activities.

A reception for the graduates and guests will be hosted by the seventh-grade parents immediately after the ceremony.

The graduates will celebrate later at the traditional grad night party, sponsored by their parents and held in the school's multi-use room.
