Portola Valley: The Sequoias to break ground for new facilities
(July 27, 2005) The Sequoias retirement community in Portola Valley plans a barbecue for invited guests on Saturday morning, July 30, to celebrate groundbreaking for a 21,500-square-foot assisted living center to accommodate 24 physically frail residents.
The current assisted-living center will be converted to a care center for memory-impaired Sequoias residents.
Both sites are located at the north end of the campus, near Portola Road and adjacent to the parking lot of the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve.
Late changes to the design of the new two-story building reflect concerns from the town's Planning Commission over the building's size.
It will have a flat roof instead of a pitched roof, lower lighting and noise levels than originally envisioned, and more landscaping to help hide the building and its 28-foot walls.
Among guests invited to the "blue-denim" affair are members of the Portola Valley Town Council, Planning Commission, and Architectural & Site Control Commission, as well as members of the governing board of the Midpeninsula Open Space District, said event organizer and Sequoias resident Bob Rutherford.
