Locals compete in national softball tourney Locals compete in national softball tourney (July 27, 2005)

Kelly Morton, who will be a senior at Menlo-Atherton High School in the fall, and Ryan McCann, who will be a senior at Menlo School, recently participated in the American Softball Association's Hall of Fame Tournament in Oklahoma City on July 1 to 3.

They played for the "California Spin," an 18-and-under fast pitch team that draws players from Bay Area high schools, says team manager Lisa McCann.

Twenty-four teams qualified for this tournament, and the top eight moved on to the association's national tournament, Ms. McCann says.

While California Spin did not qualify for nationals, it fared the best of three Northern California teams, she says.

California Spin will play in the American Softball Association's Western National Tournament, August 3 to 7 in Portland.
