Teen mom first to win new scholarship
(August 03, 2005) Although Rocio Aguilar became a mother at age 14 and dropped out of middle school, the now 17-year-old woman has graduated from high school and is the first recipient of a new $5,000 scholarship at Canada College in Woodside.
The scholarship was created by KTVU (Channel 2) news anchor Leslie Griffith to help teen mothers pursue higher education, said Rosa Perez, president of Canada College.
Named the Leslie R. Griffith Women of Courage Scholarship, it will be given to women who make significant changes in their lives or the lives of others, and are role models for young women.
Rocio volunteers twice a week at the Redwood Child Development Center, located on the Redwood High School campus, where her 2-year-old daughter attends daycare. She plans to work in health care upon completion of college.
