Centennial party planned for Folger Stable
(September 28, 2005) A full house is expected at the old-fashioned birthday party to celebrate the centennial of the Folger Estate Stable at Wunderlich Park in Woodside on Sunday, October 2.
Organizers said that they've reached the maximum number of reservations they can accept, and that no one without a reservation will be able to attend.
Built by James Folger II, son of the coffee magnate, the massive stable still holds remnants of the magnificence of a long-gone era -- pink marble baseboards, gas chandeliers, three fireplaces, and four large skylights to let in natural light.
Although the county-owned stable is still used for boarding horses, it and several associated buildings need an estimated $4 million in repair and rehabilitation work.
A committee made up of members of the Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks has been working to restore the working stable to its former glory, and it is sponsoring the event.
