Safeway 'reopens' at Sharon Heights
(September 28, 2005) Workmen were swarming over the Sharon Heights Safeway last week in preparation for the expanded store's "Grand Re-Opening" this Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2.
There will also be a preview party Friday when patrons will receive 10 percent off grocery purchases of $50 or more from 4 to 8 p.m. that day only.
Re-opening isn't quite accurate since the store has remained open during its months-long remodel. Regular patrons have gingerly navigated aisles looking for items that seemed to be moved weekly.
Used to complaining about the shabby store that opened in 1966, old-timers are wide-eyed at all the new "life-style" changes, including a new produce section and an expanded floral department located where Longs Drugs used to be.
Among the new amenities are a seafood service (including sushi) and a meat department offering individual service. Other upscale additions include an olive bar, soup bar, more hot and cold prepared food, and an expanded bakery section.
The "new" Safeway has expanded by about 20 percent to a total of 24,069 square feet. It is located at 325 S. Sharon Park Drive in the Sharon Heights subdivision in West Menlo Park.
