Around Town: Canada College hosts fashion designer sale
(October 12, 2005) The 14th annual Artistry in Fashion designer sale and student fashion show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 22, at Canada College, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd. in Woodside.
The designer sale will take place in the student center. The fashion show will take stage at 1 p.m. in the Main Theater. The event is open to the public. A $6 donation will fund scholarships for students in the Canada College fashion design department. For information, go to artistryinfashion.com.
Ragazzi Boys Chorus benefit in Woodside
A benefit for Ragazzi Boys Chorus will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, October 22, at 100 Manzanita Way in Woodside.
The afternoon will include wine, hors d'oeuvres, and a private concert by the young men.
Children will have their own "kid-friendly" food and keg of root beer, games, and a chance to visit the horses and alpacas in the estate's barn.
Tickets for the event are $75 for adults, free for children. Reservations must be made by October 17. For information, call 342-8785 or go to ragazzi.org.
Mills College Club holds Atherton brunch
The Palo Alto Area Mills College Club begins its fall season with a brunch at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton on Saturday, October 15. Adrienne Bronstein of Menlo Park is chair of the event.
Dr. Andrew A. Workman, associate professor of history at Mills, will talk about "Mills: a model women's college for the 21st century." Dr. Workman is also assistant provost for academic affairs at Mills.
Local alumni who are members of the Mills College Club board, with Ms. Bronstein, are Jane Yates, Patti Zussman and Anne Henderson from Portola Valley; and Nancy Patch, Barbara Hunder, Phyllis Bader and Jane King from Menlo Park.
Dickens House designer showcase
The 17th annual Dickens House fundraiser, holiday and designer showcase will open Saturday, October 22, at the historical Herrmann estate, 141 Pepper Ave. in Burlingame. The event, a fundraiser for St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School in San Mateo, continues through Sunday, November 6. Tickets are $25 for advance purchase and $30 at the door. There will be a "sneek peek" from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 21, with tickets at $50 each. For more information, go to dickenshouse.org.
Free Tai Chi class at The Sequoias
The Sequoias retirement community in Portola Valley is inviting community members to join a free class in Tai Chi on Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m., taught by Foothill College instructor Dona Marriott.
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese system of exercises and movements that can help people improve balance, become more calm, and lower blood pressure. For information, call Jennifer Harris at 424-4427.
Football teams join domestic violence vigil
Football teams at Menlo College and two local high schools - Menlo-Atherton and Woodside -- are among those planning to participate in a Domestic Violence Awareness Month vigil at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, at Central Park in San Mateo.
Mark Kaanaupu, head coach at Menlo College, is among the speakers and took the lead to get football teams involved, says Cherie Querol Moreno of CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse), one of the sponsors of the vigil, which is free and open to the public.
