Pop Warner: Vikings enjoy successful road trips
(October 12, 2005) Spectacular autumn weather at Belmont's Carlmont High School football field brought out the best in the Menlo-Atherton Vikings on Sunday, October 2, as they turned in some of the season's outstanding performances against Pop Warner teams from the resident Bayside Broncos.
Here are details of the October 2 action:
** Mitey Mites. Scoring early and often, the Vikings took a commanding 24-0 halftime lead over the Broncos, and cruised to victory. Isaiah Nash, Peter Bouret and Ryan Roberts scored for the Vikings in a balanced attack. Chris Blank, Marcus Avelar, Amal Duriseti and Domenic Duarte all contributed strong second-half performances. The Vikings defense was assisted by special teams success, with deep kickoffs and punts by Roberts. Impressive all-around play came from Austin Wilson, Adam Greenlow and Jack Posthauer.
** Junior Pee Wees. Three touchdown dashes by Charles Washington and another by Campbell Roellig triggered a convincing 26-0 Vikings win over the Broncos. Patrick Bruni caught a conversion pass from Andre Guzman, and threw a conversion aerial to Ryan Gaertner. Roellig had a big day offensively with a number of lengthy runs. On defense, Bryan Rodgers and Landon Baty helped snarl the Bayside attack, with Baty recovering a second-half fumble. Stocky Taualupe Tau ripped off big yardage as the Vikings put the game away.
** Pee Wees. A missed conversion proved fatal for the Vikings, who dropped a 14-13 decision to the Broncos despite one of the season's best M-A performances. Sean Barrett and Travis McHugh each scored for the Vikings, and Barrett sparkled all day on both offense and defense. Joel Santana blocked a Bayside punt for another Vikings highlight.
** Junior Midgets. Brandon Gibson went crazy on defense for the Vikings, scoring on a fumble return, a tipped pass and a safety as M-A took a 15-6 victory. Chris Gaertner's running was a Vikings highlight, and both Marquise Tolson and Wes Hagman picked off interceptions.
** Tiny Mites. The smallest (5-6 year old) Vikings took their own road trip to San Jose, where they tied, at three touchdowns apiece, with the Andrew Hill "A" team. Lavell Gates romped for three long touchdowns, and Drew Wyman amazed the coaching staff by effective play at five different positions. Jose Varela's blocking and tackling was another Vikings highlight.
