New law targets teen steroids New law targets teen steroids (October 19, 2005)

State Sen. Jackie Speier said she is pleased that legislation to prevent teen athletes from using steroids and dangerous performance-enhancing dietary supplements was recently signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The governor vetoed a similar bill she put forward last year.

The new law requires high school coaches to complete an educational course on the dangers of steroids and dietary supplements, creates a list of banned supplements, and prohibits supplement manufacturers from sponsoring school events.

An estimated 20,000 current California high school athletes have used steroids, according to the California Interscholastic Federation.

"I'm delighted that the governor has recognized the pivotal role he can play in teaching teen athletes to avoid steroids and dangerous performance-enhancing dietary supplements," said Sen. Speier, D- San Mateo.
