Notebook: Holiday concerts at Menlo School
(December 07, 2005) A variety of performing and visual arts activities on the Menlo School campus in Atherton will ring in the holiday season. All are free and open to the public.
A jazz band concert in Martin Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. gets things started on Friday, December 9. It will be followed by an orchestra performance in Stent Hall's Spieker Ballroom.
An exhibit of student photos and a sale takes place Friday through Sunday, December 9-11, in Stent Hall.
Both concerts feature music with a holiday theme. Chamber Orchestra highlights include Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, brass quintet music, Gustav Holst's Christmas Day Suite for full orchestra, and the Hallelujah Chorus from Mozart's full-orchestra arrangement of Handel's Messiah.
Vicky Greenbaum directs the chamber orchestra and Mark Warren leads the jazz bands.
On Sunday, December 11, the Menlo School Chorus, under the direction of Linda Jordan, presents a concert at 4:30 p.m. in Stent Hall's Spieker Ballroom.
Eighty singers in three different choral groups will perform Christmas and Hanukkah songs along with other popular tunes of the holiday season. Sing-alongs such as "The First Nowell," and two selections from Handel's Messiah, accompanied by an ensemble from the Chamber Orchestra, are also on the bill.
Refreshments will be served at all events. Any donations will benefit the school chorus' spring break trip to New Zealand and the Chamber Orchestra's trip to Italy in June 2006.
