As part of his Eagle service requirement, Vijay Swamy, a member of Boy Scout Troop 109 in Menlo Park, is organizing an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 17, in Fellowship Hall at the First Baptist Church of Menlo Park, 1100 Middle Ave.

Donors should bring appropriate identification, such as a driver's license or an American Red Cross donor card. They should eat a light meal or snack and drink lots of fluids before donating blood. Healthy people at least 17 years old and weighing at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood.

Selby Lane holds book sale

Selby Lane School in Atherton will have a half-price book sale, featuring Scholastic books, from Friday through Sunday, December 9 to 11. Hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds from the sale will be given to the Atherton Police Department to purchase books and gifts for deserving children, said Sue Harrison of Selby Lane School. The school is at 170 Selby Lane.
'Dream' dolls drawing

Three dolls and their wardrobes await the winners of the sixth annual Doll Project drawing to benefit the Ecumenical Hunger Program. The drawing will be held Friday, December 23.

Along with the three dolls to be raffled, there will be an additional drawing in which an Ecumenical Hunger Program child will win a doll.

Each 18-inch American Girl or Magic Attic doll comes with a trunk and complete handmade wardrobe of 15 outfits, including a bridal gown, party dresses, ethnic outfits and riding apparel, as well as coats, sweaters and nightwear.

Tickets for the drawing -- at $2 each or $10 for six -- are available at Calla in Menlo Park, where one of the dolls is on display.

The doll project was started six years ago by Luanne Malkmus of Woodside, a volunteer for the East Palo Alto-based Ecumenical Hunger Program.

Working on this year's wardrobes are Gail Reed, Bridget Morgan, Kathy Zmay and Nancy Hughes.

Celebrating anniversary of DC-3 airliner

The Hiller Aviation Museum plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Douglas DC-3 airliner with lectures, photos, videos and a DC-3 fly-over on Saturday, December 17, at the museum, located at the San Carlos Airport.

Lectures run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are included with museum admission at $9 for adults and $6 for youth (5-17) and seniors (65+). Kids 4 and under are admitted free.

USGS talk on world's climate history

"Frozen in Time -- How Ice Cores are Revealing the Composition and Temperatures of Earth's Atmosphere During the Past Million Years" will be the topic of a U.S. Geological Survey public lecture Thursday, December 8, at 7 p.m., in the Building 3 conference room at 345 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park.

Geologist Todd Hinkley will discuss how studies of the cores of ice from the Arctic and Antarctic reveal that the earth's atmosphere demonstrated rapid and extreme changes of temperature in recent geologic time.

These ice cores provide the only systematic record of the composition and temperature of the Earth's atmosphere over the last million years.

Family Service Agency seeks toys for its store

Family Service Agency of San Mateo County is seeking new unwrapped toys and donations for its annual holiday toy store at 24 Second Ave. in San Mateo. The store provides free toys for the children of Family Service Agency clients on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 9-11.

Needed toys and gifts include: Fisher/Price infant toys, large stuffed animals, balls, footballs and basketballs, sleeping bags, motorized cars with batteries, baby dolls, Lego building kits, books, backpacks, and makeup kits for teenage girls.

Menlo Park's rainfall still shy of last year

As of Friday, December 2, the last week's storms added 1.3 inches to Menlo Park's rainfall total for the 2005-06 rainfall year, said Bill Russ, Menlo Park's man with the rain gauge.

This year's total of 2.3 inches compares with 3.25 inches at this time last year, Mr. Russ said.
