Holbrook named schools superintendent Holbrook named schools superintendent (January 11, 2006)

Jean Holbrook, named last month as interim superintendent of San Mateo County schools after former Superintendent John Mehl resigned, is now the county's superintendent of schools.

She was appointed January 4 by the San Mateo County Board of Education to fill the superintendent's post until a new superintendent is elected and takes office next January.

Former Superintendent John Mehl resigned December 20 with almost a year remaining on his four-year term remaining. He resigned to "pursue new directions," said his assistant, Tom Fitzpatrick, in a press release.

Rhonda Ceccato, president of the San Mateo County Board of Education, said it was fortunate that Ms. Holbrook was available. "She is a well respected educational leader not only in the county but statewide," Ms. Ceccato said.

Ms. Holbrook's career in the San Mateo County Office of Education has spanned 30 years. Her most recent position was associate superintendent for instructional services. She also has served as director of the San Mateo Educational Resource Center, and as deputy superintendent.

Her priorities have included helping under-performing schools, supporting and retaining new teachers, and advocating for and providing quality preschool programs.

She received a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco, a master's in education and educational administration from San Francisco State University, and a bachelor's from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The superintendent heads the county Office of Education, which both supports and regulates local school districts. County office services include financial audits, legal assistance, defining a district's boundaries, and setting standards for teacher credentials. The office offers staff training and educates children with special needs and those under court supervision.
